The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced permit approval on November 14 for Enbridge’s replacement of a segment of its Line 5 liquid petroleum pipeline. The pipeline covers over 600 miles between Minnesota and Michigan, and the pipeline segment crosses forest land in Ashland and County in Wisconsin and the Straits of Mackinac.
The Wisconsin wetland and waterway permits “authorizes Enbridge to conduct specific construction-related activities that impact navigable waterways and wetlands as specifically described in the permit application, associated plans, and permit conditions”, according to the DNR statement.
Additional approvals from both the DNR and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are still required, the DNR said.
