A major project backed by Microsoft for bioenergy capture and storage (“ BECCS”) was announced by Atmos Clear to build a bioenergy plant consuming sugarcane bagasse and wood scrap with a related facility to capture and store carbon.
The facility at the Port of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will capture and store 680,000 metric tons of biogenic carbon dioxide per year and store it permanently. It is projected to require an investment of $800 million.
"We are proud to work with Fidelis on this pathbreaking project, which will bring together science, engineering, and commercial innovations to offer a compelling model for carbon removal in the United States," said Brian Marrs, Senior Director of Energy & Carbon Removal at Microsoft. "High-quality, durable carbon removal solutions from experienced developers like Fidelis are vital for Microsoft in progressing its goal to become Carbon Negative by 2030."
Fidelis said the facility will employ 75 workers permanently and 600 workers during construction of the facility. The company projected that it will support a “significant revival” for forest industry jobs in the area that have been impacted by mill closures.
Atmos Clear is a portfolio company of Fedelis, an energy infrastructure investment company.
